Greetings from the Music Room!
My name is Sarah Smith and I am the music teacher here at Jefferson. I will be at Jefferson on Mondays and Tuesdays. This is my fifth year teaching at Jefferson and my twelfth year teaching in the Mankato Area Public School system. I went to college at the University of Minnesota, Morris for my Bachelor of Arts degree and St. Mary's University for my Masters of Education degree. In addition, I have also taken many college courses from the University of St. Thomas.
I am a certified Orff and Kodaly teacher with certification through the University of St. Thomas.
The Orff philosophy of teaching music centers around sing, say, dance, and play. Through Orff teaching students use language, movement, singing, and instruments such as the recorder and xylophones to learn and practice musical elements.
For more information click on the link for an overview of the Orff Schulwerk method and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.
The Kodaly philosophy of teaching music centers around using folk songs and dances to teach musical concepts in a sequential manner. Also in the Koday method is the use of rhythm and melodic syllables. We use the takadimi system and Curwen/Glover hand signs.
For more information on the Kodaly Concept click on the link to the Organization of American Kodaly Educators.
Students will be actively involved in making music throughout the year.
